Profiles Are Back!

If you’ve ever kept up with this blog over the years there have been some transitions made.  I started doing the profiles as a fun thing it’s not meant to be pretentious or douchey.  Since I haven’t done one in a bit I figured why not start February  off right.  Here we have Chris, he’s a buddy of mine who I skate with frequently and even more frequently talk shit to.  He is a super talented creative and helps out here in anyway he can.  He will be filming and oh yeah having a part in the 51st video.  I am pretty sure he’s given the most articulate answers as of yet. Oh yeah he’s a filmer and skates better then most.

Here ya go. (Mike is me by the way)

Name:  Christopher Casey Carbaugh, my mom has a thing for alliteration.

Location:  I live in the first suburb ever built, in a house that was constructed on an assembly line in 17 minutes.  Almost 60 years later it still stands here on Long Island, but the roof does leak a little.

Occupation:  All around creative guru, went to college for graphic design, barely graduated because I was doing photo so much instead, which led me to get into videography.  So right now graphic design is paying the bills but I’d like to get out of that line of work and use those creative skills in my film making.  Trying to do a lot of non-skateboard film making too.

Who is a nicer guy you or Billy Willis?:  This is a trick question because even though people may think Willis and I are nice Scottish lads who wouldn’t hurt a fly, you put a little whiskey into us and we are both the biggest scumbags alive.  I might be a bigger hippie than him but at the end of the day its probably true that he is quite possibly the nicest person on the planet.

Favorite Filmer:  French Fred is one of the most artistic and visionary guys out there, aside from him Josh Stewart has made some of my favorite videos ever made, and of course Ty is a genius – but truthfully Jason Hernandez to me is hands down the most creative and skilled film maker in skateboarding.

Beverage of choice:  I’m addicted to the green machine naked, charles krug merlot, delirium tremens beer will make you see pink elephants…aside from that I try to stay on the water program.

Tab or no tab:  always take care of your server, im all about mutual respect

Role in 51st State:  well Mike just let me do that web commercial using some of the promo footage from Spring Ahead Fall Behind, my next full length video will be the 51st State flick, and I’m sure we’ll do other film/design stuff down the road.  Aside from that, Mike and I always vent to each other about dealing with business crap and the many woes of being creative professionals.  I make sure we skateboard together as much as possible so he sees even the filmer is flippin his board around, just so he doesn’t get that lazy shop owner status.

Favorite 51st piece:  I rock the LI hat pretty hard, but the new boards coming out are tight so I’ll be buying one of those. Its a strong brand and Mike has a lot up his sleeve.

Best eats on LI:  I’m sure most skateboarders from the Island would answer this question by saying Taco Bell, but the truth is we live on this huge ass island so you know there is some amazing seafood places all over.  I like to go over to Hicksville and get me some quality Indian food, best pizza on the island is Vintoni’s in Levittown.

North shore vs south shore:  Some of the best looking women I’ve ever had are from the north shore, but I think I am south shore for life.  I love Long Beach and Point Lookout, and I’m Levittown for life.  My grandpa was an original Levitt and I am eventually going to inherit that house which is completely unchanged from the original Levittown Cape Cod.  To me its history, they dont put any towns from the north shore in text books across the world…but I will say the LI Sound is amazing, bombing hills on the north shore is fun, and the girls are delicious.

Does being an eagle scout help with filming at all:  Sure, I’m the first guy willing to climb a tree or use my amazing knot tying skills to assemble a rig out of popsicle sticks to get the best angle possible.  Being a boy scout is about being handy and being able to improvise in even the shittiest situations.  Those skills have definitely helped me make some more interesting shots rather than just standing there with my death lens filming the boring old conventional ways.  You can call me the MacGyver of filming.

Spring ahead or fall behind:  Truthfully its a bit of both, hence the title of the film.  Spring ahead relates to all the opportunities that have occurred lately for me and the people involved in this video, and the fall behind kinda plays on the fact that we’re still just scumbags from Long Island and cant skate year round, the constant battle for spots, etc etc. Theres also a lot of personal references in there for me.  Its a name that was significant to me from the moment it was contrived.

Top 3 favorite video parts ever: Ever? thats a tall order for me to just make up off the top of my head..  Well currently, Dylan Rieder in Mind Field gets me hyped to skate every time I watch it..dude’s style is unreal.  I think I always say Danny Gonzalez in Globe’s Opinion is one of the most creative and original parts ever made.  Ray Barbee in Cant Stop, Kenny Reed in Static, MJ in Modus, Chris Roberts in Time to Shine, Daewon in Love Child and Skate More, Gonz in Krooked, any Rodney Mullen part or any footage of Gino….I could never give you a top three, I’m siked on all skateboarding and skateboarders.

Any final thoughts / words to live by:  Get busy livin or get busy dyin, thanks for letting me run my mouth Mike
